Se analiza el impacto de la desigualdad de la
distribución del ingreso, medida a través del coeficiente de GINI,
en el crecimiento del Producto Bruto Interno per cápita para un
panel de 206 individuos (países y territorios dependientes) entre
los años 1950 y 2016 utilizando el Método Generalizado de
Momentos (Arellano-Bover 1995). Los resultados indican que
GINI es una variable significativa para explicar el crecimiento
del PBI per cápita solamente cuando se la observa en términos
cuadráticos. Es decir, el efecto no es lineal sino que tendría forma
de U invertida. Al presentar este tipo de relación encontramos
un valor de GINI óptimo, donde su efecto sobre la variable explicada es máximo. Este resultado aporta nuevos elementos al
estudio que permiten ayudar a determinar si la igualdad en la
distribución del ingreso tiene una relación directa con el crecimiento del producto de un país o no y en qué grado lo hace.

The impact of income distribution inequality,
measured through the GINI coefficient, on the growth of Gross
Domestic Product per capita for a panel of 206 individuals
(countries and dependent territories) between 1950 and 2016
is analyzed using the Generalized Method of Moments
(Arellano-Bover 1995). The results indicate that GINI is a
significant variable to explain GDP growth per capita only
when observed in quadratic terms. That is, the effect is not
linear but would have an inverted U shape. When presenting
this type of relationship we find an optimal GINI value, where
its effect on the explained variable is maximum. This result
brings new elements to the research that helps to determine
whether equality in income distribution has a direct relationship
with the country’s product growth or not and in what way it does.
