Flujos turísticos internacionales en Argentina

International tourist flows in Argentina

ABSTRACT:

Argentina has suffered from a sizable tourist account deficit in 2011-2020, which amounted to a macroeconomically non-trivial currency drain. This paper explores the macroeconomic determinants of both inbound and outbound tourism demand and estimates price and income elasticities. We show evidence of considerable negative elasticity of outbound tourism with respect to the real exchange rate, while results are not conclusive for income elasticity. We conclude that high exchange rates could be used to generate currency surplus in the sector.
